The Cardiac Slowing Effect.of Clonidine and the Parasympathetic System

Abstract
The role of vagal component on the mechanism of the decrease in heart rate by intraventricular clonidine was investigated in urethane-anesthetized rabbits. In propranolol-treated rabbits the reflex carbiac slowing elicited by the pressor action of norepinephrine and angiotensin was not affected after intraventricular clonidine. In non-treated rabbits the clonidine potentiated both the reflex cardiac siowing and the pressor action induced by norepinephrine. The decrease of heart rate by 5-hydroxytryptamine was not affected after the clonidine. The decrease of heart rate by the clonidine was not affected by bilateral cervical vagotomy and atropinetreatment. These data suggest the vagal component is not invoeved in the decrease of heart rate by intraventricular clonidine in rabbits.
